About this Poem: I wrote this poem in 1995. For some reason, I still can't figure out why, it won poetry awards. Go here for the Deutsche version.

Darkness and Truth

And I ask myself,
Why must I stay in the darkness,
Why can I not know the truth;
Nothing is clear and fine.

I look through the window,
But life does not see me;
I can not understand,
Why life does not answer me.

Then I touch the window,
And scream for peace,
And then I sieze it,
But it was not free--never.

I had to give something back,
Something that I need,
Something that I love;
I know, what I had to give.

Soon I notice that something was wrong,
Something had gone away,
Something that was important,
Something that I can not explain.

Finally I had to soon understand it,
What you began;
Now I know the darkness--
It is only my fear.
